The Dallas (Maxim) DS12887A+ is a classic real‑time clock and calendar IC housed in a 24‑pin DIL‑24 (EDIP) package. It integrates a quartz crystal and lithium backup to maintain time (seconds through year, including leap‑year) even without power. With 114 bytes of battery‑backed SRAM, selectable 12/24 hr format, alarm and periodic interrupt functions, and a programmable square‑wave output, it interfaces via a multiplexed parallel bus (Intel/Motorola compatible).
